Historical Traditions of Astrology

Historical traditions are the main astrological traditions that have historically made a difference in the world of astrology and at the same time have earned a lot of believers and followers. Basically, they are the traditions that have existed long before some other traditions have made it to the lime light.

Over the years of their existence, they have experienced so many ups and downs. They became prominent in a lot of regions, and have undergone so many developments and changes. However, at present, most of them have already fallen out of use and importance. Well, there are some astrologers who still fairly believe on historical traditions, but only a few.

Best-Known Historical Traditions

  • Arab and Persian Astrology
  • Babylonian Astrology
  • Egyptian Astrology
  • Hellenistic Astrology
  • Mayan Astrology

Arab and Persian astrology is a system and tradition of astrology which is popularly known during the medieval period or also called as Middle Ages, near the East. In history, it is the system that paved the way for a new form of astrology called electional astrology which can be basically used for all means or methods of divination.

Babylonian astrology, by nature, is actually the first organized system of astrology during the second millennium B.C. Historically, it is one of systems that suggested that some planets are connected with some gods, in the case of Babylonian astrology, with the gods of the Babylonian pantheon.

Egyptian astrology is a system of astrology popular in Egypt civilization. In history, it was developed right after Alexander the Great conquered Egypt. At first, it was not a system that focuses on horoscope, however, later on, it was mixed with the Egyptian tradition of Decanic astrology and eventually became horoscopic.

Hellenistic astrology is a system and tradition astrology during the late part of the 2nd or early 1st century BCE. It was first known in Hellenistic Egypt and the Mediterranean and was just later on passed directly or indirectly by the Babylonians to other countries like India, China and Greece. Like the Egyptian astrology, it was later on mixed with the Egyptian tradition of Decanic astrology that made it horoscopic by nature.

Finally, the Mayan astrology, is a distinct system of astrology that normally adheres to Chol Qij which is like an almanac. Basically, the Chol Qij is consists of twenty naguals that are quite similar with the twelve zodiacal signs in terms of purpose and meaning.
