Egyptian Astrology
Egypt, where the Egyptian astrology has originated, is indeed one of the most significant and at the same time historical places ever since. Likewise, this is where star charts were found way back 4,200 BC.
The River Nile
The river Nile, one of Egypt’s best assets, is actually associated with astrology. Basically, astrology in Egypt can in a way predict when will the great river experience great flood through the combined forces of the dog-star Sirius and the sun.
Ever since, many astrologers even ordinary Egyptian men and women believed that the joint action of the sun and Sirius is capable of bringing floods, by which the entire Egyptian civilization depend for everyday living could turn into like a depleted land.
Astrological Signs and Egyptian Astrology
Based on some evidences, and at the same excluding the Babylonian astrology, it is in one way or another possible that some of the astrological signs of the zodiac have started in Egypt. Just take for example, in the case of the sign Aries which is represented by a ram, by which the ram first seen visible in an Egyptian zodiac, even if in some instances the head of a goose is used similarly.
Another example is with the case of the sign Gemini which is symbolized by the Twins, by which were first seen in Egypt in the image of Castor and Pollux – the two bright stars which are then called the “Two Stars”; notwithstanding that the twins also appear in the Babylonian astrology.
On the other hand, some other instances that could also be considered are those with the case of two other signs Leo and Virgo. Leo, having symbolized by the Lion is almost certainly Egyptian in origin because of the constellation the Great Dog that is typically being linked. While Virgo, represented by the virgin is somehow may have originated along with Nidaba, an Egyptian grain goddess.
Changes During the Alexandrian Egypt
Egypt was occupied and invaded by Alexander the Great in 332BC, after then, Egypt was called as “Alexandrian Egypt”, with all the Greek rule and influence. Consequently, to make Horoscopic astrology, the Babylonian astrology was mixed with the Egyptian tradition of Decanic astrology.
Basically, because of the use of the twelve celestial houses and the ascendant or in Greek, horoskopos, the newer system was called “horoscopic astrology”. Generally, the system seeks to determine the horoscope of a single soul basing on the position of the planets and stars during the exact time of birth.
In less time, the said new system of astrology in Egypt has spread across the ancient world into the Middle East, India, and even Europe. After which, further changes take place through the efforts and ventures of astrologer and astronomer Ptolemy.
One of the remarkable ones is the Tetrabiblos which eventually presented the basis of the Western astrological tradition. Another great add-on or change is the rationalization of the planets, Houses, and Signs of the zodiac particularly in terms of their functionality.
Horoscopic Astrology
According to some writings together with Firmicus Maternus, Egyptian pharaoh Nechepso and his priest Petosiris were the first ones to know the system of horoscopic astrology because it was first given to them. Luckily, the two were able to wrote a major textbook explaining the system and eventually made some noise that leads to the evolution of the Hellenistic astrology and other Horoscopic astrology forms.
