Mayan Astrology

Mayan astrology, a system of astrology basically of the Mayans, is actually one of those unique and distinct systems recorded in the history of astrology. Historically, it was a powerful system and tradition of astrology that has fully affected Mayans’ thoughts, everyday activities, ventures and beliefs.

One thing remarkable about the Mayan astrology is its use of Chol Qij or in some rare cases also called as Tzolkin. Basically, Chol Qij is a 260-day alamanac that is comprised of twenty naguals that are quite akin to the twelve zodiacal signs of the Western astrology. Their only difference with the twelve zodiacal signs is that they are conceived and treated as alive and completely appealing.

For many years, Chol Qij has played a very important role in Mayan religion, philosophy, jurisprudence, medicine, agriculture, hunting, and even in intimate relationships. Every nagual it includes is preceded by a numerical coefficient ranging from one to thirteen and is capable of ascertaining one’s luck or even misfortune.

The 260 Days of Chol Qij

There are twenty naguals basically included in the Chol Qij and every nagual is typically preceded by a numerical coefficient ranging from one to thirteen, thus making it 260 days in all. Basically, 20 naguals x 13 numerical coefficients = 260 days.

Even since, the origin of this numerical system is not widely known. But according to some Mayans, the 260 days idea was more or less from the normal human gestation period which typically runs for 260 days.

The Naguals

The naguals in Chol Qij have unique meanings. And usually, they serve as companions for life. Basically, they manipulate and condition one’s life in a very distinct way. In Mayan tradition, naguals are very significant and as a sign of giving reverence to them, propitiatory rituals are done by people, typically, on the day of their own nagual let’s say for example every twenty days or every 260 days whenever the birth nagual and coefficient return.

Uses and Similarities

Chol Qij has many uses. Generally, it is used in many ways similarly just like in natal astrology, electional astrology, and horary astrology.

Mayan astrology like natal astrology is typically used to ascertain the person’s personality and at the same time fate. Generally, Mayan astrology and Natal astrology is akin in terms of purpose. The only difference between the two is that Mayan astrology uses twenty naguals together with some numerical coefficients to predict stuff about personality, relationship to the community, and good or ill fortune, whereas Natal astrology, uses solely the exact date, time, and location of a person’s birth.

While, Mayan astrology like electional astrology, foretells what are the best and bad days for some human activities or ventures like planting, marrying, healing, hunting, journeying, or the like.

Finally, Mayan astrology like horary astrology, is used to answer some specific questions relating to life, love, etc. like for an instance: Does my partner loves somebody else? Should I close this deal? Should I marry this person and be with him for the rest of my life?

Typically, the answers for the specific questions like the ones aforementioned are drawn out by handling some 260 red tzintè seeds and consequently a nagual and coefficient.

Evocational Magic

There is still another use for Mayan astrology, specifically for Chol Qij and it’s called the evocational magic. This time, evocational magic has no any counterpart. Like many ceremonies, it is for the coming in of wealth, success in business, blessing, fecundation or the like.

However, this is not like any ordinary ceremonies done for some sort of luck and good fortune. This actually manipulates and invokes twenty naguals for petitions as well as virtues.
